FAQ

I use Pro Tools for mixing. If you’re using Pro Tools, in any version or format, you can simply send me your session and I’ll be able to upload it without any further changes.

If you’re using another DAW, such as Logic, Cubase, etc., then you’ll need to export your individual tracks as WAV or AIFF files. I prefer 24-bit WAV, but if you’re already using another format, that’s fine. Consult your DAW’s user documentation for explicit instructions on exporting your tracks.

When exporting your tracks, please set the faders to unity gain (0). If your faders are too low, the resulting exported files will also have a very low volume. Also, remove any effects, such as reverbs or delays. The only exception to this is if it’s an effect that’s an integral part of the sound (e.g., a sweeping filter on a synthesizer). When this happens, simply export two copies of the sound, one with the effect and one without.

Most importantly, make sure each audio file is exported from the beginning of the session, even if that means there’s some blank space. This way, everything will align correctly when you import the files into Pro Tools.

Once we’re ready to begin your mix, you can use any of the large file transfer services, such as Mail Big File or We Transfer, or any service you feel comfortable with. You can also use the drop-down box. Before uploading your files, it’s a good idea to compress them using either a Zip or RAR format. This is done simply by highlighting the prepared session folder and selecting «Compress» from the file menu in your browser.

YES. I’m happy to correct vocal pitch and timing as needed, if you’d like. Musical interpretations are sometimes very subjective. I’ll always ask before going out to make changes. If I feel your record could benefit from vocal tuning, or timing corrections to instruments or vocals, I’ll let you know, but it’s up to you. We can discuss options and have a plan before we start mixing.

I can help with anything from audio layer stacking and sweetening to full production services. I can offer suggestions on direction, arrangement, and composition. If you’re unsure whether or not you need this type of service, I’d be happy to discuss your production with you.

The mastering process has evolved with music technology and the way music is distributed and consumed. Generally, mastering is done using both analog and digital media. Analog tapes and vinyl records are no longer commonplace. A mastering engineer with special skills with tape and a lathe is no longer as necessary. Many great mastering engineers have adapted to new technology and the digital format, but mastering has become something that even the least experienced and least skilled can handle.

Unlike mixing, the mastering process can only make a limited change to the sound of the final product. However, as with mixing, the key factor in quality mastering is the experience, judgment, and ears of the engineer turning the knobs. Mastering can sometimes bring brilliance and depth to an otherwise seemingly flat mix. Similarly, in the wrong hands, it can ruin a good mix. If you have a mix and you’re happy with it, but the level is low and/or the overall frequency response or EQ (bass or low-end, midrange, treble or high-end) sounds like it could use some adjustment, that’s when mastering can help. Additionally, if you’re releasing a collection of songs on an EP or CD, then mastering is the process necessary to ensure all the songs play at a competitive level and are properly consistent.

Generally, 2-3 days is the turnaround time for mixing a song, but much depends on the complexity of your production and the current workload. Please let me know if you have any real deadline concerns, and I’ll let you know if I can meet them. I’ll also let you know if I have scheduling issues that require a little more time.

I’ll make as many revisions as necessary until you’re happy. Occasionally, my first mixes don’t need any revisions. Most of the time, one or two revisions have been enough to deliver excellent work. Sometimes, small, subjective details require a few more revisions. I want you to be happy with your mix, and I’ll work with you to that end, regardless of how many revisions are needed.

Mixing prices vary depending on the style of music, the number of tracks or samples, the length of the song, and the overall complexity of the production. Some very simple mixes involve a single instrument or backing track and one vocal. Those types of mixes could be achieved for as little as $450. Other productions have dozens of tracks, often more than 60, and have very detailed arrangements that require hours of work to mix to their full potential. Obviously, I can’t charge the same for that amount of work. Likewise, I don’t want to set a fixed «per song» price that is unfairly too high for clients with simple mixing jobs. My rates aren’t the cheapest, but you’ll find them to be surprisingly affordable. My goal is to offer this online mixing service with world-class results for a price that is manageable for most budgets. I have 25 years of experience and have mixed numerous record projects. I give each mix the attention and time necessary to make it the best it can be, and I will always make unlimited revisions until you are happy with your mix. Due to today’s technology, it is now possible for many who in the past could not afford a world-class studio and an experienced mixing engineer to have access to this level of service at a price that makes sense. I accept payment by cash, check, PayPal, or credit card.

You can contact me to discuss the cost of mixing your project, custom packages, and other production services. Please fill out the form on the contact page with as much information as possible about your production, and I will get back to you immediately, usually within 24 hours, and we will come up with a plan and quote to meet your needs.
